HALO Freefall Jump Wings – Regulation Size, Mirror Finish

HALO wings are the Military Freefall Parachutist Badge, earned by Pararescuemen and Combat Rescue Officers who complete military freefall training. This is the regulation-size badge in a polished mirror finish.

What the badge means in Pararescue

Freefall qualification has been required of Pararescuemen since about 1985, and it is part of the Combat Rescue Officer pipeline as well. The badge is earned at the Military Free-Fall Parachutist Course, with HALO (high altitude, low opening) and HAHO (high altitude, high opening) jumps from up to 25,000 feet, by day and night, with combat equipment and oxygen. Freefall lets a rescue team reach isolated personnel from high altitude.

The design

Each element has a meaning: a commando dagger for infiltration, a seven-cell ram-air canopy (the MT1-X, the military’s first standard freefall parachute), an arched tab for special operations, and wings for airborne capability. The badge was first authorized in 1994 and is awarded by the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army.
